55 Canberrans recognised in the Queen's Birthday Honours

Chief Minister Jon Stanhope has congratulated the 55 Canberrans - among them the Vice-Chancellor of Australia's top university, the first female head of an Australian government and one of the nation's leading authors - recognised in the Queen's Birthday Honours today.

Professor Ian Chubb, Vice-Chancellor of the Australian National University, was awarded Australia's greatest civic honour, the Companion of the Order of Australia (AC). He was recognised for his service to tertiary education and university governance in Australia and internationally, and to the community.

"Professor Chubb has been a tireless ambassador for the ANU, for Canberra and for higher education in general. His efforts bring tremendous benefits to Canberra and credit to Australia. Professor Chubb has significantly shaped and influenced policy debate on higher education, and he has provided very valuable service to a great many government advisory bodies, councils and committees." Mr Stanhope said.

Mr Stanhope said he particularly wanted to congratulate Rosemary Follett who, when elected as the first Chief Minister of the ACT in 1989, was the first woman to head an Australian government.

Ms Follett was awarded an Officer in the Order of Australia (AO) for service to the ACT Legislative Assembly, particularly through influencing the development of self-government and as inaugural Chief Minister, and to community development, human rights and the advancement of women.

"Rosemary Follett did the ACT a great service as the first Chief Minister, implementing a new system of self-government and laying the foundations for all governments to follow," Mr Stanhope said.

"She has made a great contribution to the advancement of women's rights, and has served as a very strong role model for women. She has also been a great advocate for the less fortunate members of our community."

Mr Stanhope also congratulated local author Marion Halligan, two-time winner of the ACT Book of the Year Award, who was awarded a Member in the Order of Australia (AM). And he said he was pleased to see included in the honours list many Canberrans who had made a real difference to the quality of life in the national capital, through their community and charity work. Among those honoured this year were John Harold Pennington, founder of the ACT Cross Country Club, volunteer rural fire fighter Andrew Fulton and George Williams, recognised for his work with the University of the Third Age.
